Discipline and education are the cornerstone of the Surma Sports Group, Tennis Division.  By providing students with the tools they need to face adversity on and off the tennis court, and become stronger mentally and physically , this one-of-a-kind tennis environment will help youth and adult players enjoy success on and off the tennis court.

Surma, Owner & Director Of  Tennis

Surma, began playing tennis in his home country of Nigeria. His efforts led him to a ranking of # 1 in Singles and # 1 in Doubles on the Nigerian and African tennis circuit.  Surma's abilities and interests in sports also go beyond the baseline -- he played badminton, field hockey, ping pong, volleyball and squash during his boarding school days and demonstrated leadership by serving as team captain of the badminton and tennis team.

Surma, at 17 years old, won the ITF Texaco Junior World Open Championships in Lagos, Nigeria. He made history when he made the Nigerian Davis Cup team as the first Nigerian Junior tennis player to ever make the Nigerian Davis Cup team.

Surma played college tennis at Hampton University in Virginia a team that achieved 2nd place in the NCAA championship, 1st place in the CIAA championships. He also attended Barber Scotia College and was a part of their NAIA championship team.  As a touring tennis pro, Surma was ranked 928 on the ATP world tour and was also a member of the Nigerian Davis Cup team.

Surma has been the tennis pro and Junior Tournament Director at both TPC Piper Glen and Providence Country Club and later served as Director of Tennis for The Club at Longview.  He has played tennis and practiced with many top-ranked players such as:  Yannick Noah, Paul Haarhuis, Luke Jensen, Murphy Jensen, Nduka Odizor, Yahiha Doumbia, Sule Ladipo, Derek Stephens and Ian Laster. He has been the Practice Partner to two Womens World #1 players on The WTA World Tour as well as many other top-ranked women players such as: Caroline Wozniack, Safina Dinara, Katarina Srebotnik, Bethanie Mattek-Sands, Anna-Lena Groenfeld, Mashona Washington, Melissa Torres Sondoval and Susan Love.

Tennis is more than just a job to Surma. He unselfishly shares his knowledge of the game by conducting tennis camps and clinics for less fortunate youth through a non-profit organization called “Forehand for Life.”

Surma is the founder of the Surma Sports Group, a company that performs tennis court construction and facilities management, and also manufactures a line of tennis apparel. In his spare time, he is passionate about reading, history, ping pong, squash, movies and the love of his life: flying airplanes!
